2020 Trofeo Vega - Round 1, Levier, Doubs, France

21 drivers were in the X30 Junior category at Levier over the first weekend in September, among them Roy Shaw competing in his first X30 Junior races of 2022.

Saturday 5th September 2020

Qualifying

Roy was 3rd on a dry track.

Pre-final

Roy made a good start from 3rd on the grid, and in the 2nd lap took the lead, which he held for the next 4 laps. Unfortunately another competitor had gone off track and dragged dirt back onto the race line, and when Roy came round on the 6th lap he went through the mud, clearing it for his pursuers but dirtying his tyres. Three of his rivals got past, and he finished in 4th place.

Final Saturday 5th September 2020, 14h20

Starting from 4th place on the outside, a first corner melée held Roy up and cost him 5 places. He drove a good recovery race up to 3rd place, which he held to the finish with the front two out of his reach.

So the first podium of the year!

Final Sunday 6th September 2020, 14h30

Qualifying

Roy's Sunday started not so well, the team had found a carburettor leak and in replacing it the settings got changed inappropriately. The kart was down on top speed and accelaration out of the corners, and Roy ended qualifying down in 8th.

Pre-Final

From the outside of the grid, Roy lost 3 places in the first corner down to 11th, but started to make up places straight afterwards. By the 13th of 16 laps he had climbed back to 5th place, but the driver he had just passed outbraked himself and knocked Roy into a half-spin. Roy crossed the line in 13th place.

Final

Roy again showed his determination and overtaking ability by climbing back to 6th place. That put him into 4th place in the championship at the end of the Levier rounds.
